RECENT REVIEWS

Oxygen therapy for acute myocardial infarction

There is no evidence from randomised controlled trials to support the routine use of inhaled oxygen in people with acute myocardial infarction, and we cannot rule out a harmful effect.

Videolaryngoscopy versus direct laryngoscopy for adult patients requiring tracheal intubation

Videolaryngoscopes (VLS) may reduce the number of failed intubations, particularly among patients presenting with a difficult airway. They improve the glottic view and may reduce laryngeal/airway trauma.

Ketoprofen for episodic tension-type headache in adults

Ketoprofen 25 mg provided a small benefit compared with placebo for people with frequent episodic tension-type headache who have an acute headache of moderate or severe intensity. Its use was associated with more people experiencing adverse events. Ketoprofen 25 mg was not superior to paracetamol 1000 mg for any efficacy outcome.

Corticosteroids for Bell's palsy (idiopathic facial paralysis)

The available moderate- to high-quality evidence from randomised controlled trials showed significant benefit from treating Bell's palsy with corticosteroids.

Paracetamol for low back pain

Paracetamol does not produce better outcomes than placebo for people with acute LBP (low back pain), and it is uncertain if it has any effect on chronic LBP.

Intravenous magnesium sulfate for treating children with acute asthma in the emergency department

IV MgSO4 may reduce the need for hospital admission in children presenting to the ED with moderate to severe exacerbations of asthma. Few side effects of the treatment were reported.

Polymer-based oral rehydration solution for treating acute watery diarrhoea

Polymer-based oral rehydration solution (ORS) shows advantages compared to glucose-based ORS (at ≥ 310 mOsm/L). Comparisons favoured polymer-based ORS over ORS ≤ 270 but analysis was underpowered.
